I met this beautiful soul at a networking event where we discussed in great detail our passion life and our careers, and as I listened to Amy, I found out that she had a special event to attend in December and that she was looking for something amazing to wear. Miss Amy is a petite 4′ 9″ tall so you can imagine how challenging it can be to find the perfect evening gown.

Amy came into the studio for a consultation where we were able to talk in detail about all the elements she wanted in her gown. She wanted a design in black, she wanted a fit and flare silhouette and some type of beaded or lace detail in the body of the fabric. Armed with more information I started my sketch process and came up with some styles I thought Amy would like.

Sketches

Once I completed the sketches and fabric research, I scheduled another appointment with Amy so a selection could be made. We discussed the other fabrications that would be used to create the gown and scheduled the next series of fitting appointments. I then started on patterns and muslins, ordered all the textiles needed to complete the gown. Amy came in for her first muslin fitting and it went so well that I could cut into the actual fabric.

Muslin Fitting

I loved every aspect about constructing this gown, it was very meticulous work to get the look we both wanted. Sometimes you have to speak to the fabric to get it to behave the way you need it to; I really do talk to the fabric. I simply wanted to get a great fit and balance in the gown.

Hand Sewing Lace.

When hand sewing this type of lace you have to be very precise because of its delicacy, it is a time-consuming method worth every minute when the vision is complete. It’s one of the components in the construction process that I really enjoy but the most rewarding aspect about designing apparel for clients is the moment they see the finished garment. Most of the time I have no words for what that does to me. The look on their face is absolutely priceless!
